So glad you have signed up to receive the For Random Learning Comes newsletter! Here is our third edition.

My name is Andrea LeDew, and my blog has a mix of poetry, short stories and essays. I write two to three posts a week when all goes well.

I have two new poems this week. One deals with the subject of writing and how it can be all-consuming, if we let it be. I cannot personally claim to have forsaken life for art--more the other way around, I suspect. But I hear tell, that some writers are so immersed in their craft, that very little that resembles life remains. The poem "The Writer" is about one such gentleman.

The other poem is COVID-focused, as are so many of my poems and 100-150 word stories, over the last year. If you'd like to spend some time perusing them, look in the tag cloud in the footer for COVID-19 or coronavirus, or search for the words in the search bar at the top right of each page or post.

This new poem, "Opportunist," deals specifically with the dastardly nature of the virus, and how we can never let down our guard against it. Of course, that is exactly what everyone here in Florida seems to be doing, right now. Allow me to be tiresome, and urge you and those you care about to get vaccinated and stay vigilant. This virus has surprised us before.

My latest five posts are below.
Hope you enjoy this week's installment with your Saturday morning brew.

Thanks again for your moral support and comments and be sure to encourage your friends to subscribe.

Have a great week!

Andrea

Siren Song

I was eavesdropping on a discussion about criticism on a Facebook group I enjoy, and the image of Odysseus came to me. The famous hero of Homer's Odyssey had to go through a waterway, where Sirens sang their sweet song, leading men to their doom.  I have heard different versions of what the doom entailed--they forget to mind the …

Victoria

This poem came to me as I considered, how long it had been since my parents died.  And how the pain of it all still stings. I could not help but think of Queen Victoria, who famously wore mourning clothes for her husband Albert, to her dying day.  Even though Albert died when she was only 45.  And she …

The Writer

I wrote this poem about the eternal conflict between a writer's desire to live life fully, and his entrapment, in the habits that make him successful.  My wish is, that each of you, who seek to write, strike a happy balance in your own lives.  It should never be either/or. Thanks for coming by to read. On the second …

Opportunist

On May 5, 2021, on Morning Joe on MSNBC, the US CDC Director was asked about the terrible state of affairs in India.  India is currently enduring an overwhelming wave of COVID-19 infections and deaths.  Director Rochelle Walensky was asked, if she was worried about current and future variants of COVID posing a threat to the US population.  Especially, …

Channeling

This poem came from sitting around too much, binge-watching too much, finding myself listless and devoid of energy.  A plight, which  I imagine many people find themselves in, as they try  to creep forward through the slothful slog, that is this pandemic. When we realize suddenly, how very little we are accomplishing, the only thing that rescues us from …
