A little tongue-in-cheek humor, based on a comment by sports commentator, Mike Lupica.Â
He wrote an article in the New York Daily News called Kirk Cousins’ comment on COVID-19 protocol is exactly why every athlete should get vaccinated. Worth a read, if you want a strong refutation of the popular “personal choice” argument against getting vaccinated.
The first two lines of my poem were lifted from Mike Lupica’s comments, in a discussion about athletes being coy about their vaccine status. And about measures, that sports organizations are taking, to quell vaccine hesitancy within their ranks. (MSNBC, Morning Joe, August 9,2021)Â
A quote from the article sums it up:
Not all debates in the public forum, even in a country as contentious and polarized as this one has become, involve two reasonable points of view. There are two sides to this debate about as much as there were when we fed the moronic notion that we had good people on both sides in Charlottesville.
–Mike Lupica.
Please enjoy my silly depiction of a character, who can’t bother to be vaccinated. That is, until it really matters.
“As dumb an American moment
As I have ever seen.”
I hear the words and see the carnage:
Stats upon my screen.
The graphs keep creeping up and up,
And yet, I heed them not.
I’d rather scroll my social feed,
Or check, if it is hot.
Don’t feed me bad news, once again!
Such Chicken Little clucks!
I will be fine. I’m healthy, and
I’m glad, to try my luck.
But if you ask, I may decline
To tell you, if I’m vaxed.
It’s pure self-preservation,
Warding off the libs’ attacks.
And after all, my health is private!
HIPAA is my friend.
You can’t remove my right to choose!
I’m free, to take a stand.
But what is this I hear,Â
As football’s frenzy comes our way?
My team must forfeit games,
If players test positive, you say?
Ridiculous! How can this be?
As if they’d ever take a knee!
Such overweening practices
Could never win the day–
What? All my team has got the shot?!
I’m getting mine, today.

Hope you get yours if you haven’t yet!
For another example of dubious defiance, read Great Patriots. For two takes on Charlottesville, one in August 2017, shortly after the event, and the second in July 2018 after a year of education, read Death and Other Ailments and Statues. For another example of how well we can deny reality, read Provincial.
I look forward to hearing what you think of this post!.
