{This is a response to Friday Fictioneers, a 100-word writing prompt based on a photo. A Fuzzy Navel is an alchoholic drink consisting of orange juice and peach schnapps. Thanks for the prompt and for coming by to read!}
They seemed to have little in common.
Same-aged children made them bizarre contemporaries. Disparate ages, dissonant politics: didn’t matter.
Bellies to the bar, they ordered Fuzzy Navels. Twenty-one-gun salute: to diapers, throw-up and the never-ending noise!
“Up yours!” they screamed, guzzling.
In one bright acid wash, the peach-orange cocktail erased the years.
The stretchmarks.
The gray hairs.
The blubbery overlap of wobbly flesh.
Their shoulders seemed, somehow, to slouch less inexorably, toward the floor.
All that remained of their adult selves were stubby legs, clad in wrinkled white stockings. And high-pitched voices, taunting one another, plotting yet another double dare.
A great story with vivid descriptions that took us to the scene, Andrea. Neither of my two oldest friends have children but they enjoy hearing about mine. 🙂 — Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne.
Methinks the fuzzy navels at the bar were not only the drinks. Good story-weaving, Andrea!
They might have hoisted a few more. Thanks msj!
🙂 You are welcome.
A great party. They forgot their past, they celebrated their present.
Yes Abjhit, thats it in a nutshell!
I could hear the noise in my skull! Well done.
Thanks. Even mommies have to get rowdy sometimes!
I like it! Funny yet with an undercurrent of sadness.
Thanks Liz!
Oh, what fun! It is true that, no matter how different women’s lives may seem, there are those things that we all share. And that we can all salute 🙂
Eve’s curse. ?
They had a great time but I’m not sure I’d want to be anywhere near them – unless I had earplugs!
My story is about Masie!
The bar was probably noisy anyway, so you might not have noticed them. Trading one din for another. Thanks Keith.
Hahaha fabulous. Great descriptions in this. I could visualise EVERYTHING
Thank you solo!
Loved this! Loved the writing and camaraderie despite being so different.
Thanks Sascha!
Great characterization and a fun take. Who says you have to be young and pretty to have fun?
Exactly! Thanks gah!
This was great!
I met my best friend during pre-natal classes… Don’t think we would have ever connected otherwise.
Thanks Dale. You never know who will turn out to be a good friend. But more often, we seem to come together for a time, and then disburse. Both kinds of friends are important.
This is so very true
Wonderful. Way to throw off the years and live like a youngster again! 🙂
Thanks Iain!
A few drinks can certainly reduce people to children!
Haha! So tru draliman!
Dear Andrea,
You’ve created a lively girls’ night out. I love the twenty-one gun salute to dirty diapers. 😀 Made me giggle.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks Rochelle. Playing on the homonym: navel/naval. ?
Great character sketch
