This poem describes the attitude of some honest, hard-working people, who just want to get on with life, and have little use or time for philosophical musings. These people both earn my respect, and, at the same time, make me feel a little lazy and petty. The world would certainly be a lesser place, without them.
I guess I’ve gotten used to it.
I do the best I can.
I’m no good at dissembling:
I’m not that kind of man.
The lows are low, the highs are high.
The rest rank in-between.
I summon up my courage
And commit, to forge that stream.
What use is art? What use is love?
What use the bittersweet?
More can be gained from foraging,
And earning, slow, one’s keep.
They say, I’m missing out on things.
I’m rarely in the know:
I’d rather earn my Heaven here,
Than join the ranks below.

Very insightful poem, Andrea.
Thanks Liz. i was trying to capture a certain down-to-earth voice so there wasn’t much call for fancy phrases. Simple felt right.
You captured the voice effectively.
