I wrote this poem upon reading, that the infrastructure bill had been mockingly referred to as a “Liberal wish-list” by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (This page is from the Senate Republican Leader’s own office, fair warning.) This is not the first time he has used this turn of phrase. Googling the term, I found he had used it to refer to the coronavirus relief package earlier this year, and had even used it as far back as the Obama stimulus package, in 2010.
I wonder, what would Liberals put at the top of their list, if they knew Republicans would actually read it? You may call me Pollyanna, but here’s what would be on my Liberal Wish-List:
I wish there was not an “L” word.
I wish we could get along.
I wish we could get past talking points.
I wish we could all belong.
I wish we could feed the hungry.
I wish we could get rich, too.
I wish we could live as neighbors.
I wish for a smile from you.
I wish that I understood you.
I wish I could call you friend.
I wish we could work together,
And compromise, stretch, and bend.
For all of my wistful wishing,
No matter the circumstance,
Whatever is on my wish list,
You’re certain to vote against.

I have the same wishes–with the same expected result, unfortunately.
I expect many of all parties share this wish list with regard to whomever they consider their own arch- nemesis.
I expect so, too.
