We never had a word for it.
We never thought it strange.
We never sought a cure for it,
Or fought, to rearrange
The way we think, the way we see,
The way the world appears;
The way a cosmic stillness
Keeps on ringing, in our ears.
But men will have things orderly.
Efficient, clean and neat.
No need for variation
In the mixture: obsolete.
We cry, defy the Holy Writ,
Throw grit into the wheels;
We fart, upset the apple cart,
And nip them at their heels.
What troublesome behavior!
How singularly rude,
Collapsing like an empty sack,
When we’re not understood.
When will you understand us?
When, give in to our needs?
We watch you, brother’s keeper,
Sinking deeper in the weeds:
Welcome, to our creed.

You’re a great writer
Thanks Prior, its wonderful to hear comments like that! I am in good company with you and the rest of FF!
??☀️
Enjoyed the reply and it did shed a lot of light on the ideas and emotions that fueled your words!
Many things to glean and esp like the spectral take on spectrum –
Just so many tasty nuggets
I like how the use of rhyme is used to express a struggle against the sense of order that rhyme represents.
Good point! I hadnt thought of that!
Your comment is more telling than you know. When I wrote this, I was thinking about intellectual differences, most specifically autism.
My son has autism and it has been the source of much strife and behavior, challenging the orderly way you would typically want things to go.
But more than that, i was thinking of how intolerant we are, as a society, of any variation, however small, and how much was ignored or overlooked in the past, or considered quirky or idiosyncratic. And now that person has a diagnosis.
It is the typical person’s pursuit of order that has a wrench thrown in the gears, when dealing with a person who is neurologically atypical. Yet the atypical person (particularly one with autism) may actually be seeking their own “order.” So the typical person’s sense, that everything has gone awry, is just exactly the feeling an atypical person may have in their everyday experience, hence “welcome to my creed. ”
“Sppectral” is my Halloweeny play on the word “spectrum,” often associated with autism, but applicable to humans in general, I think.
?sorry so long. Im going to copy this for another commenter as well. Thanks for reading!
Powerful- pondering various sections…
And side note – love the line image – I have a similar one from earlier this year – but only half the image became lines – the top half is of some trees.
Anyhow – the lines play with the zeros and ones and all that crazy things in tech that allow us to see – which syncs with some of the message in this post-
Upset the cart
Misunderstood
Watching
Sinking
Ringing…,
Thank you prior for reading so closely and for admiring the picture.
Your observation of how tech has been disruptive is indeed very true.
I did have something particular in mind when writing this but Im interested in getting your impressions, as it may have broader applications than I had originally intended–usually in writing thats a good thing. Let me know if you ponder further. ?
Ok – I will let you know – I did sense something religious
Or at least iconoclastic. ?
If you look at the later comments you will see my own view of this poem, though I always love hearing other people’s perspectives. I tried to copy it here, but it didnt work. ?Thanksfor reading, prior!
Ok / I’ll be back later to check them out
