{Pardon my rant at the impossibility, of maintaining a “House Beautiful” or much order, of any kind, in this Life.
The Merriam Webster definition (online), for “spit and polish” seemed to fit:
“extreme attention to cleanliness, orderliness, smartness of appearance, and ceremony often at the expense of operational efficiency.”
My title pays homage to the great Gustav Klimt painting, “To My Critics.”}
To those who fold their underwear,
Who never take a break,
Who never flip through laundry piles,
Clumped sundries in their wake;
To those, whose towels are ironed,
And whose basins gleam and shine,
Who vacuum every corner,
Every morning, rain or shine;
To those, whose counters, clear of crumbs,
Top cabinets, spit-and-polished,
To those, whose cars don’t share a space,
With things their kids demolished;
To those, whose lawns are manicured,
Whose every sauce is sieved:
Although your floors could feed a Queen,
By God, you haven’t lived!
