{This is the third post in my series Sixty Days. I began the series, when it was sixty days before our 2020 presidential election. I thought I might take a trip down memory lane in the next few weeks, with poems, stories and blogposts I have written during the Trump Presidency. Most of them were influenced by current events at the time, and so will serve as a reminder of what these years have been like.Â
This one is a warning of the dangers of apathy or inattention in choosing leaders, when the stakes are high. The curtain, as you may guess, refers to the unveiling scene, in The Wizard of Oz movie. Thanks for reading!}
Examine not
The behavior,
But the attitudes
That underlie;
Kneel not
To a savior,
But observe and open
Up your eye;
Take not
At face value,
Though a pretty face
And value high;
Seal not
With a salute,
When position, place,
Encase a spy;
Check out
And be certain,
Though the lies ring true,
They’re naught but lies;
Hide not
With a curtain,
For the Master rules
When we close our eyes.

A trenchant warning.
Thank you Liz, both for the compliment and for adding to my vocabulary! I like the idea of poetry having a sharp edge!
You’re welcome, Andrea!
